I'm Chad Gunderson, and I run Lawn Gear Scout from Amherst Junction, in central Wisconsin. My lawn is about 10,000 square feet of mostly Kentucky bluegrass — sandy soil, cold winters, and a short window every fall where the important work gets done. I'm not an agronomist and I don't have a turf degree. What I have is a lawn, a Scotts Deluxe rotary spreader, and a habit of reading the back of the bag before I buy it. This site is what I learn doing that: what I bought, what it cost, what the label actually said, and whether it did what it promised. Two rules here. Every photograph is one I took, on my own property or a neighbor's — no stock images of somebody else's lawn. And nothing gets called "best" until I've used it long enough to have an opinion worth reading. Most of what I test comes from Jay-Mar in Plover or the hardware store down the road, which means the advice tends to be specific to the upper Midwest. That's on purpose. A bag blended for central Wisconsin sand isn't the same product as whatever ships nationwide. Lawn Gear Scout is published by Gunderson Digital Media LLC.
